ABOUT THE FIREBIRD PROJECT

The Firebird Project is an NYC-based theatre production and education company that shines a new light on classical narratives. Since 2013, Firebird has produced original theatre productions that reworked well-known stories like Romeo and Juliet, Alice in Wonderland, and The Seagull, with a goal to present the myths you know and love in ways you’ve never seen them before. We also offer year-round arts education workshops & classes for teen artists, including acting, improv, playwriting, filmmaking, and roleplaying games. Both our production and education wings emphasize lasting diverse and multidisciplinary community, artistic and intellectual curiosity, and a critical approach to the classical canon.

THEATRE PRODUCTION WING

We’ve been producing off-Off-Broadway theater since 2013, with a focus on creating original and accessible theatrical offerings to our longstanding audience community. Many of our artists are longtime repeat collaborators that grew up together, trained together, and learned how to make theater together – this close-knit resident ensemble forms the foundation of our production wing. As we grow, we are excited to continue welcoming new artists into our community, and inviting their creative voices to inform our future works. Our productions examine and deconstruct aspects of the classical canon – from our silicon-valley thriller version of the first robot story ever written, to our Jacobean drama about the boys who played Shakespeare’s women. We want to spark questions like “how and why are stories told and remembered?”, “what gives stories power?”, and “what can the words of people long ago tell us about the lives we live today?”.

EDUCATION WING

Our theater education wing grew out of our background as a teen-run youth theater, and has since come to be a creative home for young artists to make new friends, hone their artistic skills and discover what they are capable of. Whether in year-round improv training, seminar-style playwriting workshops, teen filmmaking labs, or summer-long theater camps, we encourage young artists to steer their own course and develop their unique artistic voices, always with an eye toward giving their work a chance to shine. Our improv training course has regular showcases, our playwriting workshops end with staged readings performed by professional actors, our filmmaking labs culminate in original short movies, and each summer intensive ends with a show! We believe that the best way to learn about making art is by making art.
