MOVIEMASTER FILM LAB

Class shots from Spring 2023 Session with Benny Rendell. Students practicing with lighting equipment, discussing shot composition, & analyzing The Seven Samurai.

Young filmmakers, ready for your close-up? Moviemaster is a space for young artists to develop practical skills in screenwriting, storyboarding, acting, directing, design, camera direction, and self-producing their own short films, all over the course of a semester. Hands-on exercises and experimenting with storytelling techniques as they craft their own projects give students tools for future film-making endeavors. Whether you’re an aspiring director, actor, critic, or lifelong film fanatic, your MovieMaster experience is sure to be a cinematic adventure for the ages.

We first offered the Moviemaster course in 2010. Since then, students have produced brilliant short films which have garnered international attention (Clay Crow Award by the Rolikifest International Kids Film Festival in Moscow for the film School Skits), and filled out college portfolios (our participants have been accepted to School of Visual Arts, SUNY Purchase Screenwriting, NYU Tisch, Pratt Institute, and more)!

This year, Firebird founder Leo Lion is joined in teaching the course by award-winning homeschool-alumn filmmaker, veteran Firebird actor and company member, and head of indie film studio MirrorUpToNature Films, Benny Rendell. With a longstanding history of collaboration in film & theatre, Benny and Leo are excited to invite the next generation of filmmakers to the big screen!
